A Fresh Start

In this weekly space I have addressed the topic of change more times than I can remember. No matter how aware we are of the possibility of unexpected changes, they always surprise us. Some of these surprises are shocking and may not be entirely easy.

When Things Fall Apart

There are things, habits and people in our lives that become so dear to us that sometimes we don’t notice when they’re not working out quite in the way they were supposed to.

No Need To Rush

There will always be things that need attention, some of them urgently. The more you can’t stop thinking about ‘the list’, the more time seems to shrink. You wake up thinking about it, you shower and eat breakfast thinking about it, losing those precious couple of hours before the true ‘action’ of the day begins. Once you start working on doing what needs to be done you already feel burned out and exhausted – because you have actually been working for several hours in your head, making no real progress.

A Sense of Irony

We take things and people for granted on a daily basis, so much so that we’re no longer conscious of what we are doing. When we are fortunate enough to have an income, we take for granted that we are going to be able to eat every day. When we are healthy, we seldom think about what a privilege it is to be able to do anything we want (watching a movie, swimming, going for a walk, dance, etc.), whenever we want.

Go back to go forward

The other day I found myself thinking that we (humans) might be the only species on Earth who gets to go back in order to move forward. It seems contradictory, I know – please allow me to explain.

The Treasure

Have you ever wondered why we remember the tough times more vividly than the carefree, blissfully happy ones? Or, why do we become more attached to the things and projects that took the most effort and time to achieve?

On Dreams

When you start getting interested in Psychology and begin your path on what becomes a lifelong journey of learning – after many decades I still consider myself a student of Psychology – you learn about Jung, Freud, Lacan, etc. The topic of dreams has always fascinated mankind and, as a Psychology student or professional, you’re always bound to delve deeply into many teachings and interpretations. There is so much theory, even before the official beginnings of Psychology as a a discipline!

The fountain of youth

Have you noticed how many ads, tv shows, books, films, etc. address the topic of youth? It seems that as science has moved forward, accomplishing that would have been considered impossible a mere hundred years ago, it has embraced what is perhaps its most ‘popular’ goal: coming up with a ‘solution’ that allows us to be young forever.

The true meaning of ‘community’

I was talking to a friend the other day about the current perception of the term ‘community’. It’s a word that is used freely and widely because it creates a positive impact. Who hasn’t been shaken to the point of joyous tears when reading about how a community came together to support one of their own? Who hasn’t felt a current of happiness go through their whole body while watching a news story showcasing human beings helping one another?

Once Again

It would be great if everybody grew less afraid of failure as we grow older. Unfortunately, it’s not always the case. Society and western culture instill in all of us an overwhelming fear of failing at anything. Some people are so afraid that they hardly ever try anything new, much less when they are older. It’s truly heartbreaking because life is about discovering new things and having new experiences everyday. It allows us to learn and thrive.

What does ‘old’ really mean?

Given the recent losses our community has experienced recently, it’s only natural that the topics of dying and aging are constantly in our minds. It’s great to devote some thought – and plenty of action! – to how we are aging and how we want to depart from this world from a non-fatalistic perspective.

Ungovernable, unnamable, free.

My dear friend, Lulu Torbet, – extraordinary woman, artist, photographer, writer, beloved by all those who knew her – died on Monday, April 11th, 2016. She died as she lived: surrounded by explosions of joy and affection, showered by the glowing love of her relatives and many friends. Lulu and her laughter and twinkling eyes will be missed so much. Her spirit lives on within me; thanks to the MANY precious memories we created together.

The DIY Life

Whenever the power goes off, after the initial slight frustration (to which I’m sure you can relate!) I usually end up thinking about how much we’ve come to depend on electricity and automation in general. It’s such a blessing to be able to read and write and work with the help of a lamp and a lightbulb. For example: a few hundred years ago you risked blindness if you stayed up late to read or write by candlelight too often. Now, we can even read our favourite books right before bed.

The Greatest Gift

These past few days I have thought a lot about generosity but not specifically the material kind (although it is important and life-changing). I think that the most precious gift we can give another person is our time and our emotional support. This kind of gift goes unnoticed many times, even when we are the ones giving it. It’s odd, because our time and attention can absolutely transform another person’s circumstances.

The effects of vanity

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of our achievements. Success requires hard work and wisdom but it also requires support from others. Without our relatives, friends, colleagues, and loved ones; none of us would be able to make anything happen.

On Keeping Our Promises

Very few of us realize that every word we pronounce or write conveys a supremely powerful message: “this is who I am, this is where I come from, this is how I do things”. Talk about a statement!

Be The Hero of Your Own Life

I don’t know about you, but these past few weeks I have noticed that several people around me are struggling more than usual, in one way or another. Powerful shifts are taking place all over the world and it’s inevitable that our energies are altered by these changes. For some it’s more challenging than for others and now more than ever it is essential to maintain a positive outlook. We may not always be able to control the circumstances, but we can certainly assume the responsibility of having a proactive attitude and being in charge of our own actions.
