On Keeping Our Promises

In a world where vows are worthless. Where making a pledge means nothing. Where promises are made to be broken, it would be nice to see words come back into power.
– Chuck Palahniuk, “Lullaby”

ImageVery few of us realize that every word we pronounce or write conveys a supremely powerful message: “this is who I am, this is where I come from, this is how I do things”. Talk about a statement!
While it is true that actions speak louder than words; this doesn’t mean that words have little relevance. On the contrary: our word is our bond. Our phrases and promises are so potent because they carry our intentions and feelings; particularly because our thoughts and actions always have an impact on others.
We have become so used to disregarding our own words that we hardly notice anymore. How many times do we have to hear or read about broken promises, lies, false testimonies and plain deceit? Even worse than hearing or reading about these things is actually experiencing them first hand! It causes so much heartache, so much grief…and why? Because we refuse to think before we speak and we continue to make promises carelessly.
What kind of world would this be if we only said what we truly mean, and if we only made promises that we intend to keep? This goes beyond the daily occurrences or domestic situations – think about how this simple change could affect international politics and the economy, for example. Our lives would be better because we would spend less time angry and more time feeling love and gratitude.
Every day we have the opportunity to do our part – each promise you keep and every true word you speak or write paves the way to a more honest approach to life. This sets an example and creates ripples of love. Don’t you think we could all use more harmony in the world, particularly now?
