The fountain of youth

There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. – Sophia Loren

ImageHave you noticed how many ads, tv shows, books, films, etc. address the topic of youth? It seems that as science has moved forward, accomplishing that would have been considered impossible a mere hundred years ago, it has embraced what is perhaps its most ‘popular’ goal: coming up with a ‘solution’ that allows us to be young forever.
We have all seen those 20 or 30 minute-long ads for face products (creams, lotions, tonics, laser wands, massagers, the works!) whose sole objective is to get rid of wrinkles and other imperfections so we can look ‘decades younger’. Eternal youth is also a recurrent topic in Hollywood although, interestingly enough, films that deal with this theme often provide some interesting and refreshing insights. It’s odd that Hollywood succeeds where science fails, isn’t it?
What if, instead of splurging thousands of dollars a year on extremely expensive beauty products, you try to make improvements in your diet? Eat local, fresh, and organic whenever possible. Prepare a dish you haven’t had since you were a teenager and pay attention to the memories that its taste brings back. Instead of fretting over a new wrinkle you discovered yesterday while brushing your teeth, make some time to download and organize the photos you took last year and that are still stored in the memory chip of your camera – or perhaps they are traditional photos that have been sitting in a shoe box for twenty years. Buy an album and organize them! By engaging in either one of those activities, your mind will respond with a deluge of creativity and you will realize – or rediscover- where your personal fountain of youth has been all along.
After all, youth is much more than a flawless, terse skin. Don’t you agree? I would love to hear from you at docbeverly@aol.com.
