Room For Change

Let’s do a little, quick exercise. Ready? Ok, here it goes:
Think about five things you wish were different in your life, or in the world. Only five things.
Now, for each one, come up with one action you can execute that would help bring that change. Try to do it in less than five minutes – you can even write just the first verb that comes to mind for each one of the items on your list.

Fun Is A Priority

Being a responsible, active person is great: I can assure you that you contribute to the Universe in a beautiful, loving way. However, if you are one of those persons who is always making sure they take care of their responsibilities, and if you are always trying to make something useful, there is a chance that you feel that you’re wasting time if you stop and take a moment for yourself. Maybe it’s just a five minute break during which you will inhale and exhale in a quiet space, to regain your balance. Perhaps it’s a two week vacation, or a night out with your friends. Some people can never feel at ease unless they’re doing something ‘productive’ – or worse: they feel guilty for taking time off.

Love Finds You

So many of us are driven by the lifelong quest of finding love. That is: finding someone to love, who also loves us back. Of course, there are a lot of factors that come into play. I feel, now that I am in my sixties, that in order to find real love the three aspects of our being (body, mind, and spirit) have to be in alignment.

Shower Yourself With Love

Isn’t it odd that most of us think that giving ourselves some much deserved attention and pampering is a luxury, or an indulgence?
Imagine how good we would feel if we devoted an hour every day to making ourselves feel loved! It could take any form you want: either doing affirmations (here are some great ones); getting a massage, or a haircut; writing a list of the three best things we did each day and commending ourselves for those achievements.

Coming Back From The Void

Nobody can ever say it’s easy to get out of the dark parts of human experience. There are no simple and instant ‘fixes’ for many of the most heart-wrenching and challenging moments in our lives. As the centuries go by, it would seem that the negative manifestations of the human mind and the bad aspects of the human heart become more powerful.

A Few Thoughts On Anger

A wise person said to me today: “when you hate something or someone too much, for too long a time, you end up becoming a version of what you hate”. The longer I think about it, the more I understand how true that statement is. If you give it some thought you will realize it as well.

Is it really ‘the voice of reason’?

So many dreams and plans are put on hold every day, by millions of people around the world. The reasons vary; and the results can range from minor disappointment, to a lifetime of heartbreak. Once we reach a certain age, it is a bit daunting or even scary to think back on some of the plans and dreams that were put on hold years ago; those wishes that never made it into reality. Maybe life threw us a curveball and we weren’t able to do the things we wanted to do; or perhaps we chose to take a different road which we thought would be smarter, more fulfilling, or safer. Sometimes we got it right. Sometimes we didn’t – sometimes we mistook the voice of fear for the voice of reason. In any case, wondering about the ‘what if’ can make us depressed and it doesn’t offer any solutions.

The Three Mothers

Once, an elderly lady was illumining her grandchildren by telling them stories. The grandchildren wanted to hear stories from their grandmother, so she decided to tell them a beautiful story. She said, “We human beings use the term ‘mother’ to refer to the one from whom we came into existence. We also call a cow ‘mother’ because it is associated with the cosmic gods. Again, we speak about ‘Mother Earth.’ So there are three mothers. These three mothers help us at each step of life.

No More Drama

Do you ever wonder why some people persist in carrying on with toxic relationships? There are some very heavy and tragic scenarios when it comes to relationships (for example: domestic abuse), and those are the ones that tend to stay with us the most. But, have you ever considered ‘milder’, subtler situations that are, in fact, toxic relationships, too?

The Child In Us

On April 30th Mexico celebrates Children’s Day. The child I’m closest to at this moment is little Beverly, my goddaughter – the youngest daughter of Fernando, our superintendent at LifePath. I feel so happy to witness her childhood and take part in many important events of her life. It often brings back memories of watching my own daughter – Allison – growing up. There is so much joy and learning in those first years; as a parent, I can attest that every single day was a powerful lesson of love, creativity and true passion for life.

Embracing Our Differences

Come to think of it, each one of us is quite a character, don’t you agree? We all have different life stories; and we have all gone through experiences – both good and bad – that have shaped our views and our beliefs. These stories play a fundamental role in our life choices: what we do, who we choose as friends, and our spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof); just to name a few.

Do A Few Adjustments

This week, I’m going to tell you the story of two taxi drivers. Both of them live and work in gorgeous San Miguel de Allende. Both of them are Mexican and in their mid forties.

Be Awake

I come back to this topic every now and then, but I do it because it’s so real and so urgent…The importance of being present and aware can never be understated. Sometimes, while we talk to our friends or when we’re at the movies, we will find our minds wandering off to other things that worry us or matter to us: “I wonder if so-and-so will finally have that print job ready after all this time”; or “oh, I must not forget that tomorrow I have to make ‘X’ payment”; or perhaps (if we’re having a conversation) we are just thinking about what to answer to the person instead of actually paying attention to what they’re telling us.

Your New Personal Philosophy

Now that we’ve just welcomed one more glorious spring in San Miguel de Allende, we can’t help but feel inspired to renew ourselves. While any time of year is appropriate to make any change or personal improvement – a new look, a new home, a new project, etc. -, spring just seems more appropriate. Maybe it’s the beauty that surrounds us, which is so inspiring: flowers in bloom; extremely blue skies; the strong, pristine sunlight…It’s like paradise!

To Live Fully Is To Trust In Others

Image
There are many experiences that even complete strangers can bond over, because they are universal: the birth of a first son or daughter; marriage; the first trip to another country or continent…Then, there are also some experiences that we all share – at least on a general sense – which are far less pleasant and much more challenging. One of these experiences is when we stop trusting someone. When a life partner, a relative, a friend or even a co-worker betrays us, the shock can be baffling and powerful. It can put us in such a state of sadness and despair, that for a few days we are nearly incapable to think about something else.

Wanting it all, NOW – Sounds familiar?

This week’s quote is a bit long, but I just knew I had to use it. It resonated with me because for the past few days, some events have made me think a lot about our lifelong ‘love affair’ with immediacy. We want it all, and we want it now.
