Do you know how to use your life?

Sure, nothing and nobody is perfect. It’s a fact that we will never be one hundred percent satisfied or pleased with the current state of affairs. It’s human nature. Humans are the only species of mammal who aspires to or expects perfection.

Too Much Stuff, Too Much Baggage

It’s inevitable: when we move to a new home or office, a large part of the dread we feel is caused by the certainty of having to go through all the ‘junk’. These past few weeks I’ve been going through all kinds of junk. Sometimes it’s not junk: it’s just the feeling of having ‘too much stuff’.

Focus on the NOW

So much to do, and so little time to do it – sounds familiar? Well, trust me: if every other day you feel overwhelmed by your ‘to-do’ list, you’re not alone! After returning from my brief trip, it seems like I’ve hardly had a moment to sit down and collect my thoughts.

Coming Back From The Void

Nobody can ever say it’s easy to get out of the dark parts of human experience. There are no simple and instant ‘fixes’ for many of the most heart-wrenching and challenging moments in our lives. As the centuries go by, it would seem that the negative manifestations of the human mind and the bad aspects of the human heart become more powerful.

A Few Thoughts On Anger

A wise person said to me today: “when you hate something or someone too much, for too long a time, you end up becoming a version of what you hate”. The longer I think about it, the more I understand how true that statement is. If you give it some thought you will realize it as well.

Is it really ‘the voice of reason’?

So many dreams and plans are put on hold every day, by millions of people around the world. The reasons vary; and the results can range from minor disappointment, to a lifetime of heartbreak. Once we reach a certain age, it is a bit daunting or even scary to think back on some of the plans and dreams that were put on hold years ago; those wishes that never made it into reality. Maybe life threw us a curveball and we weren’t able to do the things we wanted to do; or perhaps we chose to take a different road which we thought would be smarter, more fulfilling, or safer. Sometimes we got it right. Sometimes we didn’t – sometimes we mistook the voice of fear for the voice of reason. In any case, wondering about the ‘what if’ can make us depressed and it doesn’t offer any solutions.

The Child In Us

On April 30th Mexico celebrates Children’s Day. The child I’m closest to at this moment is little Beverly, my goddaughter – the youngest daughter of Fernando, our superintendent at LifePath. I feel so happy to witness her childhood and take part in many important events of her life. It often brings back memories of watching my own daughter – Allison – growing up. There is so much joy and learning in those first years; as a parent, I can attest that every single day was a powerful lesson of love, creativity and true passion for life.

Be Awake

I come back to this topic every now and then, but I do it because it’s so real and so urgent…The importance of being present and aware can never be understated. Sometimes, while we talk to our friends or when we’re at the movies, we will find our minds wandering off to other things that worry us or matter to us: “I wonder if so-and-so will finally have that print job ready after all this time”; or “oh, I must not forget that tomorrow I have to make ‘X’ payment”; or perhaps (if we’re having a conversation) we are just thinking about what to answer to the person instead of actually paying attention to what they’re telling us.

Your New Personal Philosophy

Now that we’ve just welcomed one more glorious spring in San Miguel de Allende, we can’t help but feel inspired to renew ourselves. While any time of year is appropriate to make any change or personal improvement – a new look, a new home, a new project, etc. -, spring just seems more appropriate. Maybe it’s the beauty that surrounds us, which is so inspiring: flowers in bloom; extremely blue skies; the strong, pristine sunlight…It’s like paradise!

Wanting it all, NOW – Sounds familiar?

This week’s quote is a bit long, but I just knew I had to use it. It resonated with me because for the past few days, some events have made me think a lot about our lifelong ‘love affair’ with immediacy. We want it all, and we want it now.

When it’s not OK to ‘go with the flow’

n past newsletters, I’ve said that we should try to exercise patience and let go of our desire to control everything in life; particularly in situations that go beyond our reach: it’s futile and frustrating to get angry over a flight delay, or to be sad or upset when the weather is not ideal for a special event on a certain day.

The danger of illusion

How many times do we act motivated by situations, ideas or things that are not real?We can even make (or not make) life-changing decisions while under the spell of illusions. Think about how risky that is: you can paralyse yourself over something that will never really exist. Imagine not doing something you’ve always wanted to do just because you are under the illusion that if you do it, something horrible will happen. Isn’t it sad, and frustrating?

So what if you ‘get it wrong’?

Whenever life presents a situation in which we have to decide between two or more courses of action, most of us – understandably – feel a bit uneasy. The harder the decision, the more insecure we tend to feel. Who wouldn’t? It’s completely human to doubt ourselves. Sometimes, the more we analyze a situation, the more difficult it is to come to a definitive decision. And then, fear may rear its ugly head…

Old Habits, New Habits

While it’s true that our activities don’t define who we are, it’s undeniable that our patterns of conduct have a profound impact on the way we live. Indulging in negative behavior doesn’t just hurt us: it alters the balance of the universe, because we send not-so-great energy out to the world.

Tying up the loose ends

Here we are: another year went by in the blink of an eye, and December is upon us once more!
At this point, it’s easy to go into panic mode over any project we might have fallen behind with. Tasks, goals, resolutions…sometimes they tend to pile up and haunt us even while we sleep! Let’s try to keep in mind that December should always be about reflecting on what we learned for the past 11 months; and appreciating the blessings in our lives.

On Apathy

It is so usual, and so easy, to be discouraged by the attitude of others. Whether it’s another individual’s opinions, or those of the majority; it can be frustrating to either accept or try to modify what most people believe to be right.
