When it’s not OK to ‘go with the flow’

ImageIn past newsletters, I’ve said that we should try to exercise patience and let go of our desire to control everything in life; particularly in situations that go beyond our reach: it’s futile and frustrating to get angry over a flight delay, or to be sad or upset when the weather is not ideal for a special event on a certain day.
What happens in other situations; for example, when we are feeling unsatisfied or uncomfortable, even anguished, about something that we have the power to change; yet we don’t dare say anything because we fear that it may make us look bad, or because don’t want to disappoint others? What if we feel we are losing our zest, our spirit or even our physical health; by allowing a certain situation to continue?
It’s so important to always remember to be honest with others, but first and foremost with ourselves. You’d be amazed to know how much a lack of congruency between who we are and what we do affects every other aspect of our lives. It can bring on so many unpleasant consequences not only for us, but for those we may be trying to protect. Many times, disappointment is a made-up fear: we imagine that people will react in a certain way to our true feelings, and therefore we hide them. When we finally dare to speak up, to be open from a place of love and respect; you will discover freedom – and peace.
Sometimes not going with the flow is the right thing to do. If you don’t feel happy in your current situation – whether it’s personal or professional – don’t let the current take you to an unknown, random destination. It is up to us to decide the course our lives take; and people – at least, the good people in your life –  will value and cherish you more for your honesty.
