Culture is the process by which a person becomes all that they were created capable of being. – Thomas Carlyle
During our free time most of us like to engage in specific activities: some of us read fiction, magazines or certain blogs; or maybe we like to watch tv or go to the movies. Perhaps our favorite leisure activity is getting together with friends for a meal and/or drinks, while we discuss what each of us has been doing for the past few days or weeks.
The way we use our free time defines us as much as what we do for a living. It feeds our souls and it reaffirms certain values in each one of us. That is why it’s a good idea to pay attention to the way in which we spend those ‘free’ hours. Leisure should always be more than just entertaining ourselves – it’s a chance to become better and enjoy life in a more positive, complete way.
What is the message of the books and articles you read? Is the content of the television shows you watch cultivating your values, or is it just an amusing way to spend meaningless hours in front of a screen? What do you talk about with your friends: ideas, events, or other people’s comings and goings? Is something constructive and positive for your body, mind and spirit coming out of your leisure time?
As always, I’d love to read your thoughts at docbeverly@aol.com.
