For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity. – William Penn
We look at the process of dying and the process of mourning as farewells – which they are, in a way. After all, death means saying goodbye to the physical part of our beings. It is the end of a journey, and it is often most challenging to those who are left behind.
But – what if we choose to concentrate on what’s next? What happens when we approach death not as a ‘goodbye’, but as a ‘see you around’?
Mexicans practice this approach; it becomes more evident than ever during the Day of the Dead festivities. While November 1st-2nd are the official dates when it is accustomed to create altars to honor the loved ones who have died, and to visit their graves; remembrance of the dead is sometimes a daily occurrence in the life of most Mexicans. The dead become angels, who offer protection and counsel from the beyond. Not only do Mexicans pray for their souls; many times they also have a permanent dialog with them. “Mum, please help me pass this exam at school”. “Grandpa, please comfort me”. “Dear aunt, what would your advice be?”. “Dad, I miss you”.
There is no way to convey through words the kind of comfort and peace that this kind of spiritual dialog brings into our lives. The death of a loved one cannot be ‘overcome’ – it’s something we learn to live with, in time. However, acceptance of death doesn’t mean that we have to forget our loved ones who are no longer here, or cast their memories out of our minds. As long as we remember them and turn to them for guidance, their souls will never perish. And, after a while, we find that the part that we cherished most about them – their spirit – is still alive.
Death will come for all of us. It will alter our experience of the universe, without a doubt. Yet it doesn’t mean that our spirit ceases to exist. This is why it’s so important to cultivate love, kindness, and generosity – the impact of these three gifts during our lifetime is amazing and beautiful. Imagine what kind of difference they make for our afterlife! How terrific it would be to be remembered with love; to be called upon for advice or protection; after we have left the physical world.
Today and tomorrow, let’s celebrate and remember the souls of our loved ones. Let’s make sure that their spirits live on through us, not only this weekend, but every day of the year. Who are you celebrating? docbeverly@aol.com.
