A Note From Dr. Beverly Nelson, Director
As expats in San Miguel de Allende, we get the special treat of celebrating Mother’s Day twice in the same week. Last Friday, the joy in the air over this celebration, which is one of the most relevant of the year for Mexican families, was evident. It was such a beautiful day, in which my Mexican family – my staff – showered me with love and special, thoughtful details. Jackie and Belén, whom many of you know and appreciate, were also celebrated by their families, and here at LifePath. I thought a lot about how sacred and current Mother’s Day is in Mexico – the mother figure, in Mexican society, is so revered and omniscient; the concept of family in this amazingly diverse and culturally rich country is directly linked to its spirit. Everything and everyone is constantly being reborn, in Mexico; there is always hope, and there is always a sense of joy in the air, even in the most difficult circumstances. Motherly love is spiritual sustenance.
Today, when Mother’s Day is celebrated in the U.S., I am thinking about my own mother, and how profound her influence was on my life. We would all be completely different persons, had we had a different mother. Likewise, I think about the relationship I have with my own daughter, and I feel so incredibly grateful for having her in my life. My love has shaped her, and her love has shaped me.
Regardless of the type of relationship you have with your own mother, or with your own children, I invite you to reflect on it today. There is so much more to do on this day, than just say “Happy Mother’s Day”. Your spirit, your personality and your whole view of the world was shaped by your mother, and if you are a mother, you have had a profound influence on your children. Family is such a precious gift – even when things are ‘complicated’, we can only learn about ourselves when we know where we come from. The answer always leads to ‘family’ and, thus, to ‘mother’ and ‘father’.
To all mothers: enjoy this beautiful gift, and may you have a blissful day!
How has motherhood shaped you? I’m listening.
